Photograph Your Radious Space Like a Pro
A picture is worth a thousand words, right? Well, with that in mind, let’s talk about how you can take some great shots of your space, even if the best camera you have is on your phone!
Taking good photos is paramount to getting guests consistently booking your space and it’s easier than you think. In this post, we’ll cover a few basic tips so that you can photograph your space like a pro.
If you’re reading this, you probably already have your space set up with the basics you need to create a listing, and if you’ve chosen to take it up a notch by including some upgraded items then even better! Either way, you are ready to take some great photos to attract guests to your rentable office and/or meeting space.
Here are 7 tips for how to photograph your home office/meeting space:
Step Zero: This one might be super obvious but make sure your space looks awesome before taking any pictures! Take some time to declutter the desktop and stage the area in a way that makes it look really attractive. Add some flair with plants, a notebook and pens, and make it feel welcoming and unique. Ok, tip #1.
Get your phone out. If your phone is newer (came out within the last five years) we’re pretty certain that your camera is up to the task, but if it’s getting a bit older, you might consider taking these pics with a proper digital camera.
Tip #2.
Take your photos during the day. Shooting when there’s a lot of light will make your space feel more inviting to work in. Even if it’s nice and bright already, turn on the lights (it’ll add to the ambiance in your photos). If you have sheer or light curtains, consider closing them to reduce glare. If you have darker curtains, open them halfway so that the natural light can show through. You may want to do some test shots to see what looks best.
Tip #3.
Step back and let your camera take it all in. Wide-angle shots will show guests what a room looks and feels like as a whole. Make sure to move around to get a variety of angles so people know what to expect. The more the better.
Tip #4.
Remember the close-up shots too. Provide a few close-up photos of any great features of your space (like a tighter shot of the chair so they can see how comfy it is, or any special amenities like drinks in the fridge). In general, you should have more wide shots than close-ups though.
Tip #5.
Shoot exteriors as well. First, it’ll help people know they’ve arrived at the right place. Second, if you’ve got a patio setup that could double as a great outdoor meeting space, show it off! Shoot some wide shots and a few close-ups of the whole environment.
Tip #6.
Go horizontal and as straight as you can. Hold your camera nice and steady (to prevent blurring) and make sure your photos are taken horizontally (landscape) and are straight. And if you end up taking a photo that isn’t completely straight, your phone has editing tools that can straighten it out for you. Oh, and wipe your lens! There’s a good chance it’s got some oil from you hands on it, and that’ll show in the photos.
Tip #7.
Crouch down. When you shoot from a standing position, it wreaks havoc on your lines. Wherever possible, you’ll want to shoot your photos from about 4 feet off the ground to keep your vertical lines looking vertical. Watch this 1-minute video for an example.
We recommend having anywhere between 5 and 20 photos of your space in your listing, depending on how big it is, how many rooms it has, whether it has a ton of little added features (espresso machine, anyone?) or even has a great outdoor space for meetings.
Bonus pro-tips:
Most newer phones have a setting called HDR - turn this on and your photos will look even better!
Use your phone’s editing features to increase the contrast just a little bit — it’ll make the colors pop just a bit more.
Shoot in a 3x2 aspect ratio. Many phones default either to 4x3 or 16x9, but you can change that right in the camera app. The Radious platform is optimized for 3x2 so photos will show up a little nicer if you’ve shot them with that cropping in mind.
That’s it! Now it’s time to set up your listing and start earning revenue. And remember, you can always update your photos later if you add other features, amenities, or accents. Looking for more inspiration? Follow us on Pinterest or check out some other hosts’ listings!
